Count Basie Orchestra

So, I won tickets off of 91.1 FM, the Bay Area's best jazz station, to see the Count Basie Orchestra in Walnut Creek. We had VIP seats, which included getting a free CD... Jamie Davis "It's a Good Thing".

The band was off the charts. None of the songs they played were slow, they just kept tearing through fast bebop style big band. The last number must have clocked in around 300 BPM.

The drummer was smooth, chewing gum, making all the great licks he played seem like a piece of cake.

Anyhow, I highly recommend checking them out if they are in your area.

I also recorded three tracks with Trip Device last night. Should sound really good, stay tuned.

It's been a while, lets complain about lame bands...

Yo, I have to say I have slacked off on writing about my musical experiences this past week, so I hope I can remember all that has happened...

1) Farewell Typewriter rocked The Starry Plough in Berkeley. We played last Thursday the 14th. It was a rad show, full of fans and friends. It's great to play a venue like Starry Plough, it's so relaxed and low pressure. The band played really well, although I have no evidence of this since I forgot my video camera, so just trust me.

There was however a little drama, when Boy in The Bubble, tried to get us to switch time slots with them, after they failed to read the original email and the two follow up emails sent by the booker . I can't stand it when bands try to pull lame stuff like that. This band did end up getting the opening band to switch with them, so that they were opening the show instead of "headlining". So at the end of the night, Boy in Bubble should have gotten paid the 20% that was coming to the opening band, but instead they took the 30% that was supposed to be paid to the headlining band. By switching out of the headlining slot and into the opening slot, they should have also given up the extra cash they were scheduled to get and given it to the band that agreed to do them a favor and switch with them.

So, not only did Boy in The Bubble screw over the opening band by giving them the worst slot of the night, they then proceeded to rip them off of the money they deserved. LAME!!!!

Everyone knows the "headlining"slot is not the best on a week night. But if you booked a show in that slot, then you should play it, or you shouldn't have booked it. Trying to give another band that slot, after you screwed up, is really lame.

2) We also rocked House of Shields in San Francisco this weekend. I had never played there, it's really small and upstairs. The had a projector shooting video of the band onto the wall, on the downstairs level. That was really neat. It was about 110 degrees upstairs, so it was pretty much a sweat fest. But over all it was a very rad show.

3) I went to see Ben Folds at the Fox in Oakland last night. That was a great show. His band is really really good, and fun to watch. The vocal harmonies are definetly the highlight for me. All 5 people on stage singing in tune, it was very good for my ears. :)

Ok, that's about it for last week. This week is more rehearsing, next Sunday I record with Trip Device. Then I am off to New York to check out some jazz clubs!!!

keep it real, and don't screw over local bands. STEVe
